Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is a valuable opportunity for international students who have completed a program of study in Canada. It allows graduates to work in Canada for a period equivalent to the length of their program, up to a maximum of three years. This work permit is open, meaning graduates can work for any employer in Canada and can switch employers without requiring a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). The PGWP is a great way for graduates to gain Canadian work experience and potentially transition to other immigration programs if they wish to stay in Canada permanently.

Canada offers various types of student visas to international students based on their specific circumstances and educational pursuits. Here are some of the different types of student visas in Canada.

Study Permit (CA$150)

Cost: CAD 150
Eligibility: To be eligible, you generally need an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), sufficient funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses, and no criminal record.
Documents: Valid passport, letter of acceptance from a DLI, proof of funds, passport-sized photographs, immigration medical examination (IME) results if required, statement of purpose, etc.
Process: Apply online through the IRCC portal, pay the application fee, provide the required documents, attend a biometrics appointment if needed, and wait for a decision.

Cost: There is no separate fee for a Co-op Work Permit; it's included with your Study Permit application.
Eligibility: You must be enrolled in a program with a mandatory co-op or internship component, and your DLI must provide a letter confirming this.
Documents: Valid Study Permit, acceptance letter, co-op or internship confirmation letter from your DLI, and other standard documents.
Process: Apply online or at a Visa Application Center (VAC), provide the required documents, pay the Study Permit application fee, and wait for processing.

Co-Op Work Permit (CA$150)

Cost: The PGWP application fee is typically CAD $255.
Eligibility: You must have completed a program of study at a DLI that was at least 8 months long and meet other specific requirements.
Documents: Valid passport, letter of completion from DLI, official transcripts, proof of program completion, photographs, and other documents.
Process: Apply online through the IRCC portal, pay the application fee, provide the required documents, and wait for processing.

PGWP (Post-Graduation Work Permit) (CA$255)

Cost: Standard Study Permit application fee (CAD $150) plus the tuition payment for the first year of study.
Eligibility: Nationals from certain countries, language proficiency (IELTS score 6.0 or higher), Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD $10,000, acceptance from a DLI.
Documents: Passport, letter of acceptance, IELTS test results, GIC, proof of payment for the first year's tuition, photographs, etc.
Process: Apply online, provide required documents, pay fees, attend biometrics appointment if needed, and wait for processing.

Student Direct Stream (SDS) (CA$150)

The Fall intake is the most popular and competitive intake period in Canada. It is the beginning of the academic year, and most universities offer a wide range of programs and courses during this intake. The Fall intake is ideal for students who want to start their studies right after completing their secondary school education or for those who prefer to begin their studies in September. Students who apply for the Fall intake may have access to more scholarships and financial aid opportunities than those who apply for other intake periods.
