American University

The American University (AU or American) is a private federally chartered research university in Washington, D.C. Its main campus spans 90 acres (36 ha) on Ward Circle, mostly in the Spring Valley neighborhood of Northwest D.C. AU was chartered by an Act of Congress in 1893 at the urging of Methodist bishop John Fletcher Hurst, who sought to create an institution that would promote public service, internationalism, and pragmatic idealism. AU broke ground in 1902, opened as a graduate education institution in 1914, and admitted its first undergraduates in 1925. Although affiliated with the United Methodist Church, religious affiliation is not a criterion for admission.

Aston University

Aston University (abbreviated as Aston. for post-nominals) is a public research university situated in the city centre of Birmingham, England. Aston began as the Birmingham Municipal Technical School in 1895, evolving into the UK's first College of Advanced Technology in 1956.[8] Aston University received its royal charter from Queen Elizabeth II on 22 April 1966. Aston pioneered the integrated placement year concept over 50 years ago,[9][10][11] and more than 73% of Aston students take a placement year, the highest percentage in the UK.[12] In September 2021, it was announced that Aston University was shortlisted for University of the Year in the Times Higher Education Awards 2021. In 2020, Aston University was named "University of the Year" by The Guardian,[13] and the newspaper also awarded Aston Students' Union its "Buildings That Inspire" award.[14] The Times Higher Education Awards named Aston University as its "Outstanding Entrepreneurial University" in 2020.[15] In 2021, the university announced plans to close its Department of History, Languages and Translation, focusing instead on health, engineering, and business. This decision led to protests from members of the university, as well as humanities scholars broadly
