Sitting on the northern bank of River Tyne, it is only eight and a half miles away from the North Sea. Northumbria University, which traces its roots to the Rutherford college opened in 1877 is one of the major places of study in Newcastle. The institution received its university status in 1992 and has since retained it. Northumbria University has several campuses across the United Kingdom and Europe, including campuses in London and Amsterdam. The main campus, however, is situated in the city centre of Newcastle. Northumbria University imparts education across fields and is made up of several smaller institutes catering to different disciplines, including the School of Law, Design and the Northumbria School of Business or NSB. Apart from these, different campuses in the town centre also house the Schools of Arts & Social Sciences, Built & Natural Environment, Computing, Engineering & Information Sciences and Life Sciences. Apart from the central campus, there is another campus of Northumbria University, based in Newcastle, on Coach Lane. On this campus, you will find the School of Health, Community and Education Studies. This campus is situated a mere two and a half miles outside of Newcastle.
